Drawing on more than two decades of military leadership and years of entrepreneurial experience, Kerry Ferdinand believes lasting institutions are built through disciplined systems, principled leadership, and a culture of service. His work spans real estate, property management, organizational development, veteran advocacy, and community leadership — but each endeavor is guided by the same purpose: helping people and organizations become stronger than they were before.
Kerry's leadership philosophy was forged during more than 21 years of service, where he retired as a Sergeant First Class (SFC/E-7). Throughout his career, he led Soldiers and coordinated complex transportation and logistics operations in the United States and overseas.
Cargo NCO, Platoon Sergeant, Operations Sergeant, Detachment Sergeant, Brigade Operations NCO, and Section Chief.
Assignments supporting missions in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Germany.
Battle Staff Operations, Joint Deployment Systems, Unit Movement, Recruiting, Master Driver Training, Air Load Planning, and numerous advanced leadership and logistics programs.
The Meritorious Service Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, campaign medals for Iraq and Afghanistan, and numerous additional military awards.
Following his military retirement, Kerry founded Black Lion Realty with the belief that a brokerage should be more than a sales organization. He envisioned a company built on leadership, professionalism, accountability, and service. Like many entrepreneurial ventures, Black Lion experienced seasons of progress, setbacks, and reinvention. Rather than allowing those challenges to define the organization, Kerry used them to refine its systems, strengthen its leadership, and clarify its long-term mission.
Kerry co-founded S&K Property Management, providing residential property management services throughout Hampton Roads — leasing, tenant placement, rent collection, maintenance coordination, vendor management, owner reporting, and property oversight. Together, the brokerage and property management company were designed to support clients through the entire real estate ownership journey, not just a single transaction.
As his businesses evolved, Kerry recognized that his greatest contribution was not simply selling real estate but designing organizations capable of sustainable growth. Drawing on his military leadership experience, his entrepreneurial journey, and his academic study of psychology, he turned his focus to organizational strategy — developing leadership structures, operational systems, accountability frameworks, performance metrics, and scalable processes that let organizations grow beyond the founder. That work centers on building organizations driven by purpose, disciplined execution, and continuous improvement.
As Commander of American Legion Post 368 — one of Virginia's largest American Legion Posts, with more than 700 members — Kerry led an organization with real operational complexity: volunteers, employees, governance requirements, financial oversight, and community programming. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen organizational accountability, improve governance, enhance financial stewardship, and expand veteran and community initiatives, championing programs focused on veteran wellness, financial literacy, leadership development, and community engagement.
The experience reinforced his belief that lasting institutional success depends on disciplined leadership, transparent governance, clear accountability, and the willingness to make difficult decisions in service of the mission rather than personal popularity.
"Organizations thrive when leaders focus less on personalities and more on purpose, systems, accountability, and developing future leaders."
The lessons learned leading military organizations, building Black Lion, and serving as Commander of American Legion Post 368 all reinforced the same principle — and became the foundation of an integrated family of organizations designed to serve complementary roles while advancing a common mission.

Founded by Kerry to help veterans build successful lives after military service through leadership, entrepreneurship, education, wellness, and economic opportunity.
Kerry believes strong leaders leverage strategic partnerships when they create greater value — aligning Black Lion's sales operations with a global brokerage while keeping Black Lion's leadership, systems, culture, and community intact.
Beyond his military career, Kerry has continued serving veterans and the broader community through leadership, mentorship, and civic engagement — from his command of American Legion Post 368 to founding the Black Lion Veterans Alliance. He is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he continues his commitment to scholarship, brotherhood, and service.
Kerry continues to grow the Black Lion ecosystem while completing his education in psychology and expanding his work in organizational strategy. He believes organizations, like people, are never finished — they are continually refined through disciplined leadership, thoughtful reflection, and the courage to adapt.
